Engen mulls Zim sponsorship

Organisers of the annual Engen Under 17 soccer championships said they were considering expanding the competition to Zimbabwe and other neighbouring countries.

Officials at Engen, the giant fuel company that sponsors the tournament, said such a move would increase the competitiveness of the event and help develop football in Southern Africa.

Currently, the tournament is only played in South Africa with his year’s edition scheduled for June 30 Bloemfontein in the Free State.

“Our vision, starting probably next year, is to take the tournament to South Africa’s neighbouring countries as a commitment to the development of football at the grassroots in the region,” Engen sponsorship manager, Brad Burgh said in an interview in the sidelines of the launch of the tournament.

The Championship is one of the biggest age-group tournaments in the region and has helped unearth talent that has ended up playing in the South Africa’s elite league and overseas.

Should it materialize, Engen’s entry into the Zimbabwe sporting scene would be a boost to the country’s football. A lack of sponsorship of the sport is largely blamed for the failure of the national team in international cup competitions.
