Zanu (PF) in plot to change ‘alien’ IDs

Zanu (PF) has embarked on a clandestine campaign in which it is compiling names of Mugabe-supporting aliens in a bid to arm-twist the Registrar General’s office into converting the former disenfranchised aliens’ IDs from alien status to citizenship to make them eligible to vote.

The party believes that had it not disenfranchised aliens prior to the March 2008 elections, it would have romped to victory. With little participation by the ‘aliens’ in 2008, Morgan Tsvangirai and the mainstream MDC resoundingly beat Mugabe and Zanu (PF).

“Last Friday, Zanu (PF) Marondera District Coordinating Committee collected 400 names of ‘aliens’ at Wenimbe Farm, to be forwarded to the RG’s office for further action. The ID’s are marked ‘A’ (signifying the holder is an alien), and will be replaced with those marked ‘C’ (citizen), for them to be legitimate voters in the coming elections,” said a source in the DCC.

He said the exercise was being carried out throughout the country in the hope of mobilising thousands of voters for Mugabe.

Since early last month, thousands of names of ‘aliens’ have been collected around farms by Zanu (PF) officials across Mashonaland East Province. “Those suspected to be MDC are asked to appreciate the ‘free acquisition’ of Zimbabwean citizenship by voting for Zanu (PF),” said the source.

Officials at the district RG’s office could neither confirm nor deny the allegations and referred questions to the registrar, Kachere, who could not be reached.
