In a letter to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Media Communication and Information Technology, council chairman Alec Muchadehama said lawmakers should remove the draconian media law passed by Zanu (PF) propagandist Jonathan Moyo that had strangled media freedom.
This was vital “if all Zimbabweans are to enjoy the right to freedom of expression and access to information without undue state interference,” said Muchadehama.
He said self regulation was not an attempt by the media to run away from scrutiny, but a sign of a sincere commitment by the media to accountability, professionalism and ethical reporting.
“We want to promote a democratic culture where freedom of expression and freedom of the media are seen not as a threat but a cornerstone of the realization of democracy in Zimbabwe,” he added.
