The chairperson Rodwell Mupungu said the programme was aimed at fostering MDC structures in Zimbabwe and help them to prepare for any future elections.
The full text of his statement follows: “With the latest stance taken by SADC it has become even clearer that SADC elections are inevitable. As a result of this positive development MDC-UK External Assembly will re-launch its Twinning Programme on 09/07/2011 in Northampton.
Branch and district and twinning committee members or fund-rising committee members and members who are interested in playing this critical role to guarantee a resounding victory for the party are all invited.
The recent SADC Summit noted the decisions of the Organ Troika Summit held in Livingstone, Zambia in March 2011 and mandated the Organ Troika to continue to assist with full implementation of the GPA and appointment of its representatives as soon as possible to JOMIC etc.
And yesterday the parties agreed on a timeframe to elections, though it has not been disclosed. Therefore, for all practical purposes there is nothing to wait for. Diaspora structures should mobilise to play a crucial role in the coming election, just as we did in the 2008 election.
We should gear up to play our role in making the election victory over Zanu (PF), so decisive that the MDC will be able to carry out its democratisation and development agenda unhindered by Zanu (PF) blocking mechanisms whether in the Senate or in the Parliament or in the local councils. It is therefore crucial that the Party wins these elections with an overwhelming majority.
The Twinning Programme will target all strongholds of Zanu (PF) and make sufficient resources, financial, material, tactical and any other way, available in those constituencies to ensure MDC victory.
We will also use our superior presence in cyber-space to good advantage, whether its facebook, zook, twitter, linked-in or whatever; we should all be spreading the same message, and shut Zanu (PF) out completely.
We should also be speak out – writing articles and press-statements, tweeting and chatting on our issues, i.e. diaspora vote, dual citizenship, diaspora re-integration.
The 2012 Twinning programme will be launch now so that branches can start fundraising and targeting their specific constituencies. We should, for now, ignore the distractions that are put in our way and refocus on the challenges ahead.” – For more info contact Rodwell Mupungu – Twinning Committee 07505529287
