This was a follow on to the inaugural meeting held in May in Greater Manchester. Its purpose was to put in place interim structures to support the operation of the movement until elections are held at a national conference to appoint a substantive leadership.
“The significantly increased representation from groups not adequately represented in the first meeting, such as young people and women, demonstrated that the Zimbabwean people’s concerns are generally similar and that the search for solutions is inclusive. It is indeed time for the voices of the silent majority to be heard,” said a statement from the organisers.
Participants agreed that the nation is fast approaching a crossroad – to become an ‘out post of tyranny’ or to claw its way back with help from the diaspora. “We the people can choose to say ‘enough is enough’ and reclaim what is rightly ours – our freedoms and our humanity. No one should take that away from us,” said the statement.
It was agreed that the tide against tyranny is rising and the voices of the people are getting louder, as well as the voices of the ranks of the police and armed forces whose image was being tarnished by a select few.
The meeting agree that the Zimbabwean brand must be rebuilt, “that we must build an identity that we and our children will be proud of”. Participants shared the view that, “we have to stand up against those with whom we once fought alongside because they have chosen to betray the people”.
The ruling elite, now massively wealthy, had destroyed the national education system and sent their children to top universities around the world. “Their children are being nurtured to be future leaders of the world whilst the average Zimbabwean’s child is being groomed in the so called national youth service camps to be ‘green bombers’ so that they follow orders to murder, rape, beat and steal.
“Freedom for the people of Zimbabwe continues to be a myth. The people can no longer accept the sacrifice of their freedom ‘in the name of patriotism’.
“This movement calls on every Zimbabwean to join hands in the spirit of our nation, to rise up and say to those who have failed us, ‘You are fired!’”
