Voters’ roll disgrace

Zimbabwe should only hold a referendum when the voters’ roll has been cleaned up, The National Youth Development Trust (NYCT) has said.

According to the Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN), the country’s voters’ roll is a mess and needs to be purged of ghost voters. However, Registrar General Tobaiwa Mudede, who at one point said that the voters’ roll needed to be sorted out, now claims that there is no problem with it.

“It is NYDT’s position that no constitutional referendum should be held before a thorough clean up of the voters’ roll,” said a spokesperson for the organisation

An April 2010 audit of the voters roll carried out by ZESN showed that at least 27 per cent of voters registered in the current voters’ roll are dead and only 18 per cent of those registered are youths aged between 18-30.
