
In his address to the nation this morning on radio and Television, President Banda said all logistics have been put in place and was proud to announce the date for elections to be held in September.
“I extensively consulted with the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) about the suitable dates for elections, most of the logistics have been put in place and am also informed that the voter final register will be ready by this month end,” said President Banda.
President Banda said al the Local government, Parliamentary and Presidential elections will be held on the same day.
“I therefore take this opportunity to inform the nation that the elections will take place on the 28th September 2011, which will be a Tuesday, and I have also signed the statutory instrument number 77 of 2011 allowing the holding of the local government elections on the 28th September 2011,” he said.
He said holding of elections was the only democratic way of allowing people to choose their leaders, adding that since 2008 when he took over office from the late Levy Mwanawasa, his government has achieved so many things.
President Banda has also thanked cabinet for the current economical developments the country has recorded in the past three years under his leadership.
“My government in the past three years of office we has achieved three consecutive bumper harvest, we have allowed people to own houses, we have worked on roads, we have built health institutions throughout the country and when other countries failed to address the issue of the economic down-turn we systematically managed,” said President Banda.
He appealed to the people of Zambia to remain calm as the country heads towards the election, saying he was still the commander in chief of all the armed forces.
President Banda also said during this time government would continue to function normally as usual. “I still remain the Commander in chief of the armed forces, the police will do its work and other essential workers such as Doctors, Nurses, Teachers and other civil servants will help me run government and will attend and represent the nation at all international meetings,” he said.
He also said the office of Vice president will remain functional to help his office and other government offices.
