Borehole ends 24-year water crisis

The installation of a borehole at Somuza by the local MP, Arnold Sululu of the MDC-T, has finally ended a 24-year-old water crisis in the area.

Somuza is ward 5 of the vast Silobela constituency which measures 100km in length and 80km in width.

Villagers told The Zimbabwean that before the borehole was sunk they had to travel over five km to reach the nearest source of water.

“It was so difficult for us to carry out agricultural projects in the area because there was no water. Even if we could put together inputs to start our own community gardens, we would be stuck on the issue of water,” said Lovejoy Nyika who has lived in the area for the past 13 years.

“People from, other areas have been cashing in on the problem by selling vegetables at exorbitant prices knowing we would have no choice than to buy them but now the borehole will end that,” said another villager, Xobani Nyati.

Sululu said the borehole was sunk through funds from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

“I sunk eight other boreholes across the constituency but I must admit that Somuza has been the most hit by the water crisis over the years,” he said.
