Chiefs above politics: ZYD

Traditional leaders must be above politics and should not be subordinate to politicians, Zimbabwe Youths for Democracy has said.

In an interview with The Zimbabwean last week, the Advocacy and Communications Officer for ZYD, James Manyau, said since traditional leaders were there to stay, they must be apolitical.

“Chiefs and headmen must also unite and refuse to be politicized or marshalled into politics as this compromises their leadership. Politicians in turn must desist from politicizing traditional leaders,” said Manyau.

He added that people expected fair adjudication over disputes. Manyau castigated the Chief’s Council for starting the rot among traditional leaders.

He called for the reformation of the conduct of traditional leaders as a matter of urgency.
