Ncube was abducted at his home in Zhombe on August 6 by suspected Zanu (PF) activists. Three days later he was found dead and buried in a shallow grave 300m from Malamulela shopping centre.
Police then picked up John Ncube (21) and William Marugu (31) of Zhombe as suspects in the case.
However, local magistrate Tendai Mahwe this week ruled out putting the two on defence saying facts submitted by police did not display reasonable grounds that they committed the crime.
“The suspects are being held on the basis that there are the last people seen with the deceased a day before he disappeared. However, no more evidence has been put forward linking them with the crime,” Magistrate Mahwe noted before urging the police to proceed by way of summons if fresh evidence was found.
MDC-N Vice President Edwin Mushoriwa last week pointed out that his party strongly believed Ncube was killed by Zanu (PF) supporters who had assaulted him in the past.
Kurauone Chihwayi, the MDC-N Deputy Media Secretary, said the circumstances surrounding the death of Ncube symbolised Gukurahundi massacres.
