Plot to oust councillors exposed

Deputy Local Government Minister Sessil Zvidzayi has dismissed a probe team set by Minister Ignatius Chombo to investigate corruption at the council here, saying it is partisan.

The seven-member team is led by Chegutu Town Clerk Joel Chikuruwo, and includes Willie Muringani (former Chegutu mayor), Ben Moyo (former Chitungwiza deputy mayor), M Hungwe (deputy director, Urban Local Authorities), M Mariga (district administrator, Mvuma) A Nhamo (chief accountant — Local Authorities Financial Advisory Section) and L Gopoza (principal administrative officer).

According to Chombo, the team should “verify allegations of corruption being levelled against council” and submit recommendations to him for implementation.

However, Zvidzai told The Zimbabwean that the team had a hidden political agenda that might see councillors being fired unfairly, as has happened elsewhere.

Chombo has controversially fired three councillors in Harare and several others from Rusape as well as the Bindura mayor after his hand-picked probe teams found them guilty of corruption.

“The probe team for Kwekwe is not inclusive at all. The team should also have included officials seconded by me as Chombo’s deputy. and I should have been consulted. Chombo wants to fix MDC-T councillors. Even if you sent Satan to the council, he would not find any candidate for hell,” said Zvidzai, who is the former executive mayor of Gweru.
