Returning Benjani re-energises Pompey

Portsmouth manager, Steve Cotterill, this week hailed the return of Zimbabwean striker, Benjani Mwaruwari, who recently returned to the club, as an astute signing saying the player would rejuvenate the former Barclaycard Premiership team.

The English club is languishing at the lower echelons of the log and was again on the receiving end this past weekend when they fell to a defeat to Brighton Hove Albion.

Cotterill is confident the former Warriors skipper will help the club rediscover its form. He has made an impact off the field, the Portsmouth boss told the club’s official website.

“He is already given everybody a lift. He’ll bring strength and a big heart. I spoke to him last Thursday night to see if he wanted to come here. He’d already turned down an offer from Blackburn. We finalised it on Friday night and he flew down on Saturday morning, signed and trained at Eastleigh. He may not have played that much lately but he’s been fit. We have just got to get him up to speed. Benjani is a fantastic player who brings energy.”

Mwaruwari has returned to Pompey, a club he played for between 2006 and 2008.

After that stint, Benjani played for Manchester City and Blackburn, who he left in the off-season after failing to agree terms.

The surprise return of the proven goalscorer’s capture before the match against Brighton proved the highlight of a frustrating afternoon at Fratton Park where Pompey lost 1-0.
