Byo adds pipeline

In a bid to meet the city‘s increasing water demand the Bulawayo city council has added another pipeline at Insiza dam.

About 80 percent of the city’s water is contained in the dam, but its old pipeline is too small to draw sufficient water to meet the city’s water demands. The additional pipeline was added to the existing one to increase drawing capacity from the dam.

The city’s unscheduled interruptions in supply were attributed to the small pipes.

“Work is now in progress .An inception report was reviewed and approved,” said the city director of Engineering services, Simela Dube.

Dube said most of the city’s water was held at Insiza dam but there was insufficient water to sustain the city’s unsurpassed water demand due to the dam’s pipeline constraints. The dam contains 80 percent of the city’s water

Bulawayo has got five major supply dams, namely Insiza, Inyankuni, Lower Ncema, Umzingwane and Upper Ncema.

“The total amount of water stored in the dams at present is 248,123,712 cubic metres and based on the average monthly draw down of 9 488628 cubic metres, the expected depletion period translates to approximately 26 months” said Dube.
