Democratic transition debate

Netherlands-based pressure group Zimbabwe Watch will next month organise a meeting to discuss democratic transition in the southern African country whose shaky coalition government has been rocked by in-fighting.

Leading Zimbabwean scholar and political analyst, Brian Raftopolous, will be the guest speaker at the one-day workshop in Amsterdam to coincide with the 2011 EVS Africa Day on October 29.

Raftopoulos is expected to discuss the role of the international community in Zimbabwe's democratic transition.

Other speakers will include Dutch and European Members of Parliament.

Raftopoulos currently chairs the Zimbabwe Institute, which is a partner of the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy.

He also is director of research and advocacy at the Solidarity Peace Trust and has published widely on Zimbabwean history, politics and economics.
