The bronze went to Tezita Ashame of Ethiopia in 4:14.41. Mozambican Naira Zanguene trailed in 14th position and a time of 4:45.80.
Kenya also took the top two positions in the men’s 1500 metres. Caleb Ndiku won the gold in a time of 3:39.12, and Colins Kiprotich took silver in 3:39.72. The bronze went to Algerian Taoufik Makihoufi in 3:39.99.
The final of the women’s 400 metre hurdles was won by Ajoke Odumosun of Nigeria in 56.25 seconds. The silver and bronze medals went to Wenda Theron of South Africa (57.13) and Kou Luogoun of Liberia (57.34).
In the women’s 4 x 400 metre relay, the Nigerian team took gold in a time of 3:31.21, followed by Senegal (3:32.21) and Kenya (3:37.37).
In the final of the women’s shot put, Auriel Dogmo of Cameroon won the gold medal with a throw of 16.03 metres. Silver and bronze went to the South Africans Veronica Abrahamse (15.7 metres) and Sonia Smuts (15.29 metres). Mozambican Georgina Chirindza was in seventh and last place, with a throw of 11.86 metres.
In the final of the men’s 200 metre, Idrissa Adam of Cameroon came first in 20.66 seconds. The silver medal went to Ben Youssef Meite of Ivory Coast (20.76), and the bronze to Obakeng Ngwigwa of Botswana (20.94).
In the men’s 4 x 400 metre relay, the Kenyan team won the gold medal in a time of 3:03.10. Nigeria was second in 3:05.26, and Botswana took the bronze medal in 3:05.92. The Mozambican team came 6th and last in 3:18.98, even though it included Kurt Couto who on Wednesday won the silver medal in the men’s 400 metre hurdles.
Ugandan Moses Ndiema won the men’s 5000 metre race in 13:43.08. Ethiopian athletes came second and third: Yenew Getahun won the silver in 13:43.33 and Abayneh Woldegeo took the bronze in 13:43.51.
