Among the final races was the men’s 200 metre individual medley, in which South African Chad le Clos and Darian Townsend scooped the gold and silver, with times of 2:00.70 and 2:01.76. Taking the bronze was Taki Mrabet of Tunisia, with 2:03.46.
In the 4 x 100 medley relay, the South African team (consisting of le Clos, Townsend and Gideon Louw) won gold in a time of 3:46.74. The silver and bronze medals went to Algeria and Kenya, in times of 3:51.09 and 3:53.55.
In the 50 metre freestyle dash, Gideon Louw took the gold for South Africa in 22.34 seconds, followed very closely by the two Kenyan brothers, David and Jason Dunford, on 22.71 and 22.87.
Roxanne Tammadge of South Africa won the longest race, the 1500 metre women’s freestyle in a time of 17:03.22. The silver medal went to Melia Mghezzi of Algeria (17:21.95) and bronze to Shrone Austin of Seychelles (17:27.76).
In the women’s 200 metre backstroke, it was Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe who took the gold in a time of 2:12.40. South Africans Mandy Loots and Natasha de Vos won silver and bronze, in times of 2:16.68 and 2:18.18.
Loots took the gold for South Africa in the 200 metre butterfly in 2:12.46, with her compatriot Bianca Meyer four seconds behind her on 2:16.66. The bronze went to Sarah Hadj of Algeria on 2:20.61.
The best women performers in the pool were Karin Prinsloo of South Africa, Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe who both took four gold and one silver medal, and Mandy Loots who won two golds and four silvers.
For the men, the top multi-medallist was Jason Dunford of Kenya who won two gold medals, three silver and one bronze.
The boxing tournament has also ended, with Algeria taking seven of the 40 medals, Cameroon six and Mauritius, Nigeria and South Africa four each.
The three heavy weight categories were all won by Algerian boxers on Friday night. Banchebla Abdelafid beat Lawal Lukman of Nigeria in the light heavyweight category, while in the heavy weight category Boloudinet Chouaib beat Apochi Efefobor, also of Nigeria. Finally, in the super heavyweight category (over 91 kilos), Rahmani Kamel beat Trabelsi Ayemen of Tunisia.
