Games: Two more bronze medals for Mozambique

Mozambique has won two more bronze medals in the 10th All Africa Games in Maputo, bringing the country’s total medal haul to nine (two silver and five bronze).

In the chess tournament, Vania Vilhete won the bronze medal, while Maria Muchavo won the bronze in the 200 metres for disabled athletes, with a time of 27.44 seconds.

The gold and silver medals in this category both went to Nigerian athletes. Deborah Adewale won the final with a time of 25.49, while Mary Awaza came second in 26.82.

Meanwhile, in the men’s basketball tournament, Mozambique has qualified for the quarter-finals. On Tuesday night, the Mozambican team beat Rwanda by 73-64.

At the start of the game, however, Mozambique seemed to be going down to defeat. At one point the score was 11-0 in Rwanda’s favour, and the first quarter ended with Rwanda up by the margin of 20-15.

The Mozambicans fought back, overtaking Rwanda in the third quarter of the game to lead 60-50. Rwanda clawed back some of that advantage in the final quarter but not enough to avoid defeat.

In the basketball qualifying group A, Mozambique won three games and lost one, and was thus top of the group. In the quarter finals the Mozambican team will meet Ivory Coast on Thursday.

In Tuesday’s other basketball matches, Ivory Coast beat South Africa (62-45), Nigeria beat Mali (71-48), and Angola beat Egypt (88-81).

The women’s basketball tournament is over – and the coach of the Mozambican team, the Spaniard Luis Hernandez, has paid the price for failure. After winning its first six matches, it was widely assumed that the Mozambican team would win a medal. But it was defeated by Senegal in the semi-finals, and then by Nigeria in the game to decide the bronze.

Hernandez became the scapegoat, and was sacked on Tuesday. Temporarily, the Mozambican Basketball Federation has promoted his former assistant, Carlos Niquice, to coach the women’s team while it prepares for the African basketball championships to be held in Mali later this year.

Hopes of a Mozambican medal in handball or in beach volleyball evaporated on Tuesday. In the men’s handball quarter-finals, Algeria crushed Mozambique by 36-16. In the other semi-finals, Senegal enjoyed a narrow victory over Cameroon (25-23), Egypt beat Nigeria (34-29), and Angola beat Congo (25-21). The semi-finals will be held on Thursday.

In women’s beach volleyball, Mozambique lost to Kenya by two sets to one. Kenya took the first set by 22-20. Mozambique came back to win the second set 23-21, but the Kenyans clinched victory in the third set by 16-14.

In the other qualifying match, Nigeria beat Algeria by two sets to one ((20-22, 21-8 and 15-11).

The semi-finals were played later on Tuesday, with South Africa beating Kenya in two straight sets (23-21 and 21-19), and Mauritius beating Nigeria by two sets to one (21-16, 13-21 and 15-12). The final, between South Africa and Mauritius, will be played on Wednesday.

In the semi-finals of the men’s beach volleyball, South Africa beat Ghana in two sets (21-19 and 21-18), and Angola beat Nigeria, also in straight sets (21-15 and 21-19). South Africa and Angola will play for the gold medal on Wednesday.
