The 25-year-old Mawoyo, popularly known as Tino, announced his entry into the game in style as Zimbabwe returned to test cricket with matches against Bangladesh and Pakistan last month. He scored his maiden century against visiting Pakistan in the recently concluded one-off Test. During the match played at Queens Sports club in Bulawayo, Mawoyo carried his bat through the innings in the only Test against Pakistan, scoring an unbeaten 163.
The cricketer’s sensational form saw him make the biggest movement in the International Cricket Council Reliance Mobile ranking for batsmen. He is now ranked as the 64th best batsman, having moved 59 places up the ladder in the latest rankings ICC released last week.
The Mutare-born star hailed the progress he has made over the past two months.
“I have been working hard on my game for two-three years. I have taken on the role to let people bat around me. Obviously Grant Flower has worked a lot with me to improve that aspect of my game over the last four-five months,” said Mawoyo.
He first came into prominence eight year ago when he led the Zimbabwean Under-19 cricket team in six Under-19 One Day Internationals.
He suffered the lowest point of his career earlier this year when injury ruled him out of the ICC World Cup 2011.
He overcame the abdominal muscle tear to make his Test debut against Bangladesh in Harare on August 4.
