Karuru’s French frustration

Zimbabwean international, Ovidy Karuru, looks to invoke Article 17 as a culmination of his unhappiness at French Ligue 2 club, US Boulogne, where a recent request to move away ended in frustration.

The player’s legal advisor, Gavin Mkandla, says that Karuru is almost certain to leave the club at the end of next season.

Karuru, who arrived at the club in 2009 as a 19-year-old, looks to invoke Article 17 of the FIFA Transfer Regulations, which states that players can unilaterally cancel their contract with their club after a certain protected period has expired, should an amount of compensation be paid to their original club.

Mkandla this week told The Zimbabwean that he would take Article 17 as his last option, following recent failed moves to some clubs that were interested in his services, but were turned down by Boulogne.

“He might leave Boulogne at the end of the next season because he is frustrated with a lack of regular football. His contract will be outside the protected period next season, meaning he can invoke Article 17.”

Karuru (22) will be required to give notice of two weeks following the final competitive match of the season of his intention to invoke Article 17. The amount of compensation to be paid to the club must also be agreed upon within this time frame.

Following protracted negotiations, the versatile former Masvingo United and Gunners midfielder signed a four year deal and has appeared in 60 of the first team's fixtures to-date.

Instead of looking forward to a breakthrough season in France, the skilful player is looking elsewhere, with a few South African teams having already shown an interest in him.
