Scores of Zimbabwean nationals who applied for South African documents under the Zimbabwe Documentation Project could fail to complete the application process, after the host government’s most recent revelations that it was failing to contact them.

Briefing the media here recently, South African Home Affairs Department’s Director-General, Mkhuseli Apleni, revealed that his department would wrap up the ZDP at the end of this month, but highlighted the contact problem.

“You will recall we have informed the media that about 143 000 permits have been issued, leaving us with a balance of about 132 000,” said Apleni.

“But these have already been pre-adjudicated. We are currently sending SMSs to people that their applications have been adjudicated, but we are still awaiting the outstanding documents.

We have managed to send all these SMSs but there is also a group of people we cannot contact. We are not sure if they have changed numbers or if they have left the country.”

Apleni expressed confidence that the project would be finalised at the end of this month.
