According to daily paper 'Diario de Mozambique', the immigrants were travelling inside two trucks, when they were spotted at a checkpoint in Changara district, during a routine inspection.
The spokesman for the provincial police command in Tete, Jaime Bazo, said the immigrants entered Mozambique through the Malawian border, and they were trying to reach Maputo, the Mozambican capital.
Apparently, they intended to cross the border to enter the neighbouring South Africa, in search of better living conditions.
Bazo said that the immigrants and both drivers of two trucks are under police custody.
While the immigrants will be deported from the same border they entered Mozambique, both drivers will have to answer for their actions.
In recent years, a number of illegal immigrants use Mozambique as a corridor to get to the more prosperous South Africa.
