More than 20 Somalis entered Zimbabwe through the Mozambique border over the weekend in a bid to flee the conflict that has troubled the East African nation for decades.

The Somalis came in through Mariya on their way to Tongogara refugee camp in the Middle Sabi, about 100km from the border. They were carrying heavy bags and had difficulty communica-ting with the local people since they cannot speak English. “They passed through Zimbabwe Republic Police Rimai sub office and we are not aware of what they were told, but they proceeded with their journey,” said a local man.

Somalia is suffering what humanitarian organisations have described as the most severe drought in 60 years, worsening an already complex humanitarian situation affecting 13 million people. Before the drought struck, years of conflict had already sent nearly a quarter of the population to other African countries and the western world.

The International Organisation for Migration Manicaland office was not reachable for a comment at the time of going to print.
