PSL roundup

Our referees proved once again that they were not up to standard, when their inept handling of two games in Bulawayo and Mutare almost resulted in violent scenes.

Midlands-based Munyaradzi Mawone almost caused mayhem at Barbourfields stadium, during a fired-up encounter that saw log-leaders Highlanders emerge 1-0 winners over Caps United.

Though Bosso gaffer, Kelvin Kaindu, chose to keep mum on the performance of the centre man, it was clear the referee had a bad day, denying Milton and Graham what looked like clear goals in either half of the match.

The fans should be praised for resisting the provocation as they cheered their team to victory in face of that adversity. This was the second time in two weeks that Bosso have been hard-done by referees in a home match, after they were denied a clear goal against Harare City.

In Mutare Buffaloes coach Saul Chaminuka could not hide his disappointment, after Batsirai Muchenje’s handling of his side’s 1-1 draw with FC Platinum.

“I have never seen such poor refereeing. The referees should be respected, but the way in which the game was handled today cost us a lot and I am very disappointed,” said Chaminuka.

Early this year ZIFA was accused of lacking fairness, when it hired foreign officials to handle big cup matches, but local match officials are doing very little to justify those claims.

Meanwhile, Tavaka Gumbo and his assistant Brighton Muchambo, became the first casualties of the season, when they were axed at strugglers Hardbody last week.

Club Treasurer Nicholas Nyere and Chairman Patrick Chikwanda have also been relieved of their duties, while organising Secretary, Malvin Paradza has been suspended for abusing proceeds from the sale of the team’s replica jerseys.

Wellington Ngulube the team spokesperson confirmed the latest development.

“The changes are meant to strengthen the team. We were scoring first but our opponents have been levelling the scores before beating us,” he said.

“We want to survive relegation for the benefit of the Gweru community by winning at least half of our remaining matches.”

The upheaval follows revelations that the struggling league debutants Hardbody have also lost lucrative sponsorship deals valued at more than $ 100 000. The club is currently facing serious financial constraints, having failed to pay players in full since the beginning of the season.
