Wage dispute continues

Council workers affiliated to the Zanu (PF)-aligned Zimbabwe Federation of Trade Unions have threatened to attach council property to recover outstanding salaries and wages.

According to a special council meeting chambers last week, the workers intended to attach property to recover a total $800,000 allegedly owed them by council. The figure accumulated as a result of over nine months of non-payment of salaries and wages, as council battled with non-payment of bills by residents and the ongoing economic problems facing the country in general.

“We have sought legal advice regarding the issue as we feel the workers were blowing their demands out of proportion. Payment arrangements have already been made by council. Several workers have been allocated residential properties by council to offset what they were owed. Following agreements reached between council and the workers, some 200 more residential stands have been identified for the purpose at Yellow City Suburb. In light of the developments in this regard, there is no way the outstanding payment could be even half what they are demanding,” said Town Mayor Farai Nyandoro.

He said some of the Yellow City stands would be sold to residents on the council waiting list, to pay in cash workers not interested in the residential property swap deal.

Last year the workers went on a two week job action demanding settlement of the non payment of salaries and wages by council. Drum beating protestors invaded council town house days on end and brought business at the local authority administrative complex to a standstill.
