Exercise while pregnant

Dear Aunty Lisa

I am two months pregnant and I am someone who has always loved exercising. I used to jog and do some stretches before I learnt that I was pregnant. I would love to keep exercising, can you please let me know if it is safe for my unborn child? – Pretty

Dear Pretty

Exercising while pregnant is not a bad thing, it is actually recommended. It will help you a lot when in labour. They say labour is a marathon, you need to prepare for it. But there are some exercises you need to avoid so that your baby is safe and healthy. Exercises like sit-ups or anything that you do lying on your back are not encouraged. While jogging, especially in your late months, you may find your breathing difficult. That is normal and you should not push yourself too much. Rather try fast walking – it does just as much good. Make sure you are in control of your breathing and that you keep yourself hydrated a lot. Dehydration is said to be one of the causes of preterm labour and it can be avoided by drinking a lot of water. Exercising will help you get rid of the baby fat fast after labour as well. But do not aim to lose weight with your training, gaining weight is important for your baby’s health and growth inside the placenta. Right now you cannot control weight gain, just make sure you stay fit and let Mother Nature take control. – Aunty Lisa
