I am sorry: Tavengwa

Sharon Tavengwa has apologised for “letting the nation down”, after she wobbled out of the London 2012 Olympic Games marathon last week.

The 30-year-old athlete was Zimbabwe’s sole hope for a medal in the women’s track and fields events, but a recurring knee injury returned to haunt her, leaving Ethopia’s Tiki Gelana to bag gold in record-breaking style.

“I am sorry to have disappointed all those who expected good results from me. I thank all my friends for the great support during this testing period. As an up-and-coming runner, I learnt a lot from participation,” said Tavengwa, whose otherwise fruitful career has been dogged by injuries during the past year.

Towards the end of 2011, she picked up a virus while competing in Morocco and was sidelined for three months. She later sustained a knee injury that kept her out for six weeks.
