
But they face several challenges that include scarcity of water, exorbitant transport costs to and from the market and lack of capital. “I started growing vegetables three decades ago but I have nothing to show for it. I think the government should include us in their programmes and help us buy water pumps, fertilizers and tools,” said Kudakwashe Vera, one of the farmers.
Even though there is not much policy focus on smallholder vegetable gardening, particularly in rural communities, economists consider it potent modern day intervention to boost household livelihoods and contribute to economic growth.
