Zimbabwe crash out of cricket World Cup

The Zimbabwe Under 19 cricket team have crashed out of the 2012 cricket World Cup currently running in Australia after losing heavily by six wickets to the West Indies at the Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville Thursday.

Zimbabwe needed to win this game to remain with a realistic chance of qualifying for the Super Eight stage but their modest 148 for 8 was not enough to guarantee their continued participation in the tournament.

Zimbabwe’s poor show is even clearly manifested in the fact that their top scorer was Malcolm Lake who could only manage a paltry 31 runs.

In response to the Zimbabwean target, the West Indies powered to 150 for four in 35.1 overs to win the game with 89 balls remaining.

Kraigg Braithwaite powered in 70 runs to set the West Indies on course for victory and was still in play when the target was reached.

The West Indies who won all their three matches in the group qualify along with India who on their part humbled Papua New Guinea by 107 runs to sail through.

West Indies will now face New Zealand in the quarter finals while Zimbabwe return home.
