In some parts of the city, residents have gone for more than two weeks without water. The worst hit areas are Entumbane, Harrisvale, Old Pumula, New Magwegwe and New Lobengula and Tshabalala.
“According to the city council water rationing schedule, we are supposed to get water 72 hours every week but here in Magwegwe we have not received water for the past two weeks. The whole of last week I slept in a queue at a borehole which was drilled by World Vision some time back. The borehole will very soon become dry because it is being over strained,” said Mandla Moyo, a resident in the area.
Two of the city’s five water supply dams have already been decommissioned and in the remaining dams water levels have reached critical levels.
The city council last week recommended that every household must flush their toilets at 7.30PM every three days when water services are restored across the city during the on-going water shedding. The city’s engineers said there was no longer enough water in the reticulation system and waste was not moving. The build-up is causing sewer pipes to burst all over the city.
The council is expected to access water from the Mtshabezi Dam by mid-October this year.
