Rusike pursues Warriors dream

Mathew Rusike believes his move to South African glamour club, Kaizer Chiefs, will help him realise his dream of representing the Warriors. The 22-year-old recently signed a three-year contract with the Amakhosi, following a protracted contractual battle with relegated Jomo Cosmos.

“Playing for a big team like Kaizer Chiefs is no small matter and you do not get here by chance. So, I feel that when the selectors give me a call-up and a chance to show my talents, they will see what the fuss was about. In addition, I have performed well for the Under 23s, a team that is the core of the new-look national team that can do wonders at next year’s African Nations Cup, should we qualify. We have such talented players like Khama Billiart, Lincoln Zwasiya, Abbas Amidu and Archieford Gutu,” Rusike told The Zimbabwean in Johannesburg.

Rusike is among the most familiar faces at Chiefs, who have several Zimbabweans in their books. Jimmy Jambo, Willard Katsande and Lincoln Zwasiya are part of a Chiefs side that is heavily tipped to win the Absa Premiership this season.

“Playing with my countrymen has really made it easy to settle in. I have always been good friends with Willard and Lincoln. Zimbabwean guys generally get along well and stick together. It has therefore, been easy to slot in. I would have loved to play with Thomas Sweswe and Tinashe Nengomasha, but they have since left. Nonetheless, that is football. I guess we will be giving them hell when we play against them!” added the youth international.

Despite achieving his ‘dream’ move, the player still harbours hopes of playing overseas. An ankle injury put paid to his hopes of a trial stint at the then English premiership side, Bolton Wanderers last year while some French and Belgian sides were reportedly interested in his services before he signed for Chiefs.
