Tsvangirai aides’ confident wedding will go ahead as planned

Officials from Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s office are confident his wedding will go ahead as planned this Saturday, despite spirited efforts by his estranged lover to stop the ceremony.

Locadia Karimatsenga Tembo last week filed an urgent application at the High Court, seeking an interdict to stop the Premier’s wedding to Elizabeth Macheka. The emergency chamber application will be heard in Harare on Tuesday.

Tsvangirai’s lawyer, Innocent Chagonda, responded saying there was no merit to the case. He gave notice to oppose the application.

A source in the Prime Minister’s office likened Karimatsenga’s action to that of a girlfriend trying to stop a boyfriend from marrying.

‘Any court action against the person of the Prime Minister must be taken seriously and responded to appropriately. In this instance, it is our view that Karimatsenga’s application is an abuse of court process, vexatious and frivolous,’ a source said.

He said it’s close to three months since the Prime Minister publicly announced his marriage and wedding plans to Macheka, but Karimatsenga waited until the week before the wedding to try to stop it.

Aspiring ZANU PF MP Jonathan Samkange, is Karimatsenga’s lawyer. He says his client would suffer ‘irreparable prejudice’ if Tsvangirai’s wedding to Macheka went ahead.

But this was rubbished by officials in Tsvangirai’s office who described her actions as desperate and an attempt to tarnish his name. Our Harare correspondent Simon Muchemwa says many people in the capital believe Karimatsenga’s attempt to stop the wedding is only aimed at mud slinging the MDC leader without any evidence she’s still his wife.

‘There is a lot pessimism that there is absolutely no truth in what she has raised in her court papers. Some people believe everything on that paper smells of revenge, anger, hatred and an attempt to settle scores.’ SW Radio Africa
