Rahman Gumbo’s men thumped the Palanca Negras 3-1 to put forward a strong case for qualification for South Africa 2013, but most soccer lovers are still angry, or at least confused, as to why their “hot striker” did not turn up. After all, Gumbo had apparently managed to convince him out of a hushed retirement from international soccer.
Most have refused to swallow the excuse by Musona’s club that the Augsburg ace was invited late.
But there seems to be some credence to the German club’s claims. Another Warrior, Tinashe Nengomasha, missed that triumph for “unexplained reasons”, according to some media reports.
The defensive midfielder told The Zimbabwean this week that he, like former Kaizer Chiefs teammate Musona, got his national team call-up late and so could not travel. “The General” is just across the Limpopo River.
“I really wanted to play in that game because I like representing my country, I always have,” said Nengomasha, now with Bidvest Wits.
“There was a delay in the invitation – but I am looking forward to playing in the return leg. I am very happy that the team played well. I was impressed. Beating stubborn Angola 3-1 anywhere is a big result and it gave us a huge advantage. We will now go to Luanda highly-motivated and ready to fight for qualification. I hope I will be called up in time for that game.”
Most Zimbabwean national team players ply their trade in the ABSA Premiership and familiarity with the conditions will give them an added advantage – SHOULD they qualify.
“There are millions of Zimbabweans based here, while the host country is also a driving distance from home, so we must make the trip,” added the die-hard midfielder.
