Supersport United have refuted recent claims that former Warriors skipper, Benjani Mwaruwari, has signed with the club.

Mwaruwari was reported to have signed a two-year deal with the South African Nedbank Cup holders, but officials denied it earlier this week. Coach Gavin Hunt revealed that they were still negotiating with the former Manchester City forward.

“He is still training with the team but there are certain issues that need to be agreed on by both parties before he signs a contract,” said Hunt. “There is no doubt that Benjani is a quality player whose presence would make a huge difference to our squad. He has showed us his skills, determination, focus and that winning mentality any coach requires from a striker.”

The striker, who made his name here while playing for Jomo Cosmos in 1999, has been training with the Absa Premiership side for about a month now. Hunt said there was high possibility he could sign with the club that has struggled to score.

“He is like a soldier and is always ready for the battle. Signing him would be good for the team. I believe he will be signed in few weeks time because we are all satisfied with his work rate,” added Hunt.

Mwaruwari has also had a glittering European career with then French Ligue 1 outfit, AJ Auxerre, where he scored 24 goals in 88 appearances between 2002 and 2005. He finished Ligue 1 top scorer in his debut season and also scored goals for them as they stormed the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 2004, after he had helped them to a Coupe de France win the previous season.

He scored 20 goals in 94 appearances for Portsmouth and also played for Sunderland and scored three times in 18 appearances for Blackburn Rovers in 2010-11. He scored four times for Manchester City in 23 appearances. He has 29 goals in 44 appearances for The Warriors.
