Comrades entries soar

The Comrades Marathon Association is expecting a ‘flood’ of entries, after more than 5 000 athletes submitted their applications a month after online applications opened.

CMA Race Director, Johan Van Staden, said the response by local and international athletes for next June’s edition had been phenomenal. “We already have nearly a quarter of our entry tally filled up in just the first month of our entry process,” he said early this week.

Prospective entrants have until November 30 to get their entries in, with the process set to close when the cap of 18 000 entries has been reached.

Zimbabwean athletes have in recent years dominated the ‘Ultimate Human Race,’ particularly Stephen Muzhingi, who has three winners’ medals. A fourth successive gold medal eluded him earlier this year, as he finished sixth, two places behind Marko Mambo.
