The maize and tobacco farmers are exchanging sweet potatoes and maize for kachasu, in spite of their poor harvest that was affected by below average rainfall.
A Kachasu brewer, popularly known as Mai Jobho from Kimcote Farm, confirmed the development and said the majority of people could not afford to pay for the illicit beverage with cash.
“People here enjoy the taste of my brew (kachasu) and most of them can’t afford to buy it since they earn a living through maricho (menial jobs) at nearby farms. They pay for their drink with their harvests and I give them alcohol,” she admitted.
A 100ml bottle of kachasu costs between $0.50 and $1 and the drinkers trade 25kg for as few as three bottles.
The police strongly condemn the drinking of the illegal beverage after the media published reports of people who died after excessive drinking of the brew.
