Police mistreat pole dancers

Women’s rights activists came out guns blazing against police officers at Harare Central Police station for forcing two pole dancers to perform for them while in detention.

Zoey Sifelani and Beverly Sibanda were arrested for public indecency after pictures of them dancing with no clothes on were published in local newspapers.

The two were reportedly forced to dance when in police custody. “Police harassment of women is pathetic,” said Virginia Muwanigwa, Women’s Coalition Chairperson.

Muwanigwa singled out the pole dancers’ treatment at the hands of the police on Wednesday night as a form of abuse. “It is not standard procedure to force the women to dance while in detention, no matter how serious their offence is,” Muwanigwa said.

Zimbabwe Young Women’s Network in Peace Building Director, Grace Chirenje, said the fact the two young ladies were licensed adult entertainers from the Censorship Board meant they should have been treated with respect.

“The young women are talented entertainers who deserve support from the community. There is no need for discrimination. Instead people must be seen to support the women since it is a source of employment and income for them,” Chirenje said.
