Policeman contests polls

Police Chief Superintendent Jeremiah Chiwetu of Harare Province, kick started his political campaign to be a Zanu (PF) parliamentary candidate with a rally at Nhowe Business Centre last week.

The Police Act and public service regulations make it unlawful for civil servants to engage in active politics. Chiwetu, a serving senior police officer, told villagers that he would turn their constituency around if he won the election.

“I would like to assure you that your economic challenges would be taken care of should I win the seat. All school leavers will be conscripted into both the army and the police as a result of my influence. Since I am a senior cop, conscription of school leavers into the police force would not be a problem. I also enjoy good relations with Commander Defence Forces, General Constantine Chiwenga, and would utilise on that to enlist willing youths into the defence forces,” Chiwetu told the crowd of some 50 villagers.

He promised local women that they would benefit financially from Zanu (PF) praise songs they would be assisted to compose.

“All Zanu (PF) praise songs composed here have been recorded for radio and television. As composers, you would be paid royalties for your efforts. You would realise that Zanu (PF) is a people-empowering party.”

The women were promised farm inputs such as fertilizer and seed.

Chiwetu would also “fund poultry projects to benefit households”.

“Unlike other politicians who are segregates, I would sponsor projects such as piggery for men’s cooperatives. In this regard, I would urge men to form 10 men project groups and I would provide them with seed capital to embark on piggery projects. I will do my best to turn around your economic fortunes,” said Chiwetu.

Chief Lovemore Zenda ‘Svosve’ urged villagers to vote for Chiwetu at the forthcoming Zanu (PF) primary elections.

“I would like to urge you all to vote for Chiwetu at the party primary elections. Chiwetu is our son who hails from the constituency. Surely, he would have the interests of the constituency at heart.”

Villagers who attended the meeting described Chiwetu as ‘a very dangerous person’ and discussing his political fate would be ‘at a high risk’.

Traditional leaders warned villagers against voting for the MDC like they did in 2008.

Zanu (PF) officials such as Lawrence Katsiru and Tsitsi Sekeramayi (wife to Zanu (PF) Senator, Sydney Sekeramayi) are expected to battle it out against Chiwetu at the primaries.
