Recently, Mavambo Dawn Kusile, led by Simba Makoni, was denied clearance by the ZRP to hold rallies scheduled for Mutoko and Wedza. “We have been trying to hold rallies but police refused to clear us. At first they told us that there was no space. When we did a follow up on the issue this week, we were told that there was insufficient manpower to police the rally,” said Mashonaland West MKD Vice Chairperson, Tofaranashe Gumbo.
Makoni condemned the act as a complete disregard of the rule of law.“This action by the police typifies the rogue nature of the regime and the complete disregard for the rule of law. The denial by police for my party to hold rallies should be condemned in the strongest of terms,” he said.
MDC-N spokesperson, Kurauone Chihwayi said the partisan security forces were being used by Mugabe to frustrate opposition parties’ efforts towards the creation of a just and fair Zimbabwe.
MDC-T spokesperson, Douglas Mwonzora accused the police of running a crusade to block and disrupt his party’s election rallies using a variety of excuses.
“They recently cancelled our rally that was supposed to be held at Matizha Business Centre in Gutu West. Police claimed the venue had also been booked by Chief Serima who was supposed to have a meeting with the villagers on the same day. From what we gathered later, no meeting ever took place at the venue which shows that it was just an excuse,” said Mwonzora.
However, police spokesperson, Tadius Chibanda dismissed the allegations. “Some people just want to tarnish the image of the police. We are not blocking any party from holding rallies for as long as they have the required paperwork,” said Chibanda.
