Expelled mayor eyes new party

Local City Mayor Tedious Chimombe has set his sights on a new political party, following his expulsion from the MDC-T a few months ago. This is despite the fact that the city fathers still had an option to appeal the decision and possibly win as it had become clear that MDC-T had not followed disciplinary procedures.

According to sources, Chimombe has decided to join the newly formed United Movement for Democracy party, which is headed by South African-based business mogul, Mutumwa Mawere. There has not been much talk about Mawere’s party since reports of its formation several months ago. However, it is understood that MDC-T National Chairman Lovemore Moyo spoke to the mayor about his intention to join another party.

Chimombe was one of the 12 MDC-T local authority officials who were fired from the party after a probe team led by party Deputy Secretary General

Tapiwa Mashakada implicated them in corrupt activities. The resolution was passed on August 24 by the PM Morgan Tsvangirai’s National Executive Council.

Soon after the development, Chimombe told The Zimbabwean that he would challenge his expulsion because he was never given a chance to give his side of the story. He further accused former Gweru executive mayor and Deputy Local government minister, Sessil Zvidzai, of influencing the move.

However, in a recent interview, Chimombe revealed that he had resolved to ship out from the MDC-T completely and join another party.

“I am discontinuing my earlier intention to clear my name and return to the MDC-T. My feeling is that I was betrayed and my enemies within the party are trying to ruin me,” said Chimombe who was also the MDC-T Midlands Youth Chairperson. “Come next year, I will have settled with another progressive party.”
