Sikhala recently told The Zimbabwean that: “People should take media reports that Mugabe agreed to keep soldiers confined to barracks during coming elections with a pinch of salt. Mugabe has adopted a dual image and is playing both the bad and good boy tactics to suit his circumstances.”
The militant Sikhala said the international community should not be naive and give him undue credit for ‘promising’ violence-free elections.
“Mugabe says one thing today and says something different tomorrow depending on his audience.” Sikhala said Mugabe was desperately seeking legitimacy from both the regional and international groupings, in the unlikely event that he wins coming elections.
“Only a fool would believe him,” he said. Sikhala took a swipe at what he described as naivety on the part of MDC-T President Morgan Tsvangirai.
“My heart bleeds to learn that Tsvangirai is easily fooled into believing Mugabe’s lies.”
Last week, a local daily paper reported that Mugabe and his two other GNU principals had agreed at one of their meetings to confine the military to barracks during the coming elections. Against prescriptions of the SADC engineered GPA, Mugabe has reportedly been holding secret meetings behind Tsvangirai’s back. The service chiefs are on record as having vowed never to allow an elected leader who did not participate in the armed liberation struggle for Zimbabwe to rule the country.
Sikhala commended MDC leader Welshman Ncube for giving Mugabe a run for his money.
“Ncube seems to be backed by a knowledgeable team of political advisors. He is treading the political mine-field with care. He is not playing into the hands of Mugabe like Tsvangirai.”
