Malaria cases reduced

Zimbabwe should be congratulated for reducing cases of malaria from 13, 6 percent in 2006 to 2, 5 percent in 2011, a top official has said.

National Malaria Control Manager in the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Joseph Mberikunashe, said cases of malaria in the country currently stood at 2, 5 percent, while the prevalence is at 0,3 percent.

During a recent media tour, he said the country was now at 50 percent malaria risk, adding that 2, 3 million cases were recorded per year in early 2000.

“There are now less than 350 000 cases recorded in recent years. Death has declined from an average of 3,000 per year to less than 300 per year,” said Mberikunashe.

He attributed the decline to efforts by the government to fund malaria control programmes. Mberikunashe also paid tribute to other funding partners such Global Fund for their efforts in fighting malaria.
