
He said that he had already met Sport and Recreation Commission director-general, Charles Nhemachena, and the principal director for sport, Paul Damasane, on the state of the sport.
Once a top boxing nation with a three-time Commonwealth champion, Langton Schoolboy Tinago, and two Africa champions Proud Kilimanjaro Chinembiri and Stix McLoud, Zimbabwe no longer has even a regional title holder.
“I am in the process of appointing the new board. I am waiting for further advice from the relevant officials. The board will be critical in revitalising the sport,” Coltart told The Zimbabwean recently.
The current board, headed by Richard Hondo, was appointed way back in 1980, when Zimbabwe was first admitted to international sport. Once a source of pride, boxing can sometimes go for more than a year without holding a tournament and local boxers have been losing disgracefully on the international stage due to lack of bouts a home.
Renowned boxing promoter, Stalin Mau Mau, recently said it was difficult for promoters to match-make boxers, as local boxing rankings were in a shambles because most boxers were inactive.
