The Zimbabwean Davis Cup team member, in inspirational form for his college team last weekend, outlined plans to play in some international professional tournaments later this year.
The 19-year-old, on a scholarship at the Florida State University, helped the men’s team to victory over rivals University of Florida and Furman University at the Indoor Tennis Facility in Tallahassee.
He convincingly won both his matches against opponents from the two institutions and powered his university to an overall 12-nil victory in the singles.
“Making the transition from junior to professional can be a difficult process and I believe that Florida gives me the opportunity to mature physically and mentally,” he said. “I have already learnt so much in one year and by the end of May, I will be more than ready to compete on the professional tour. I plan to play future tournaments in Florida, California and maybe some in Africa.”
He aims to use the period between now and May to boost his rankings while competing against other universities on a weekly basis.
“I am 99th in the National Collegiate Athletic Association national rankings for singles and 27th in doubles. I expect to be in the top 50 in the singles and in the top 20 in the doubles by May. I have used 2012 and part of 2013 to really groove my game and improve all round.”
