War vets vow to block PM

War veterans have once again vowed to resist Morgan Tsvangirai’s ascendency to power in the event of an MDC-T victory in the next elections.

In an exclusive interview with The Zimbabwean, the Chairman of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association, Jabulani Sibanda, said it would be “foolish” for war vets to allow an MDC-T rule in Zimbabwe.

“Do you think that war veterans in Zimbabwe are foolish enough to accept that (MDC-T victory)?” said Sibanda.

He added that the war veterans would block an MDC-T government as a way of safeguarding Zanu (PF)-initiated policies like the land reform programme and the indigenisation programme.

Land and minerals

Zanu (PF) accuses the Morgan Tsvangirai-led MDC of being against land redistribution and indigenisation but the latter has said it is only opposed to the manner in which the two were being handled.

“Our people fought for more than a hundred years for the control of land and mineral resources and now they are controlling them because of Zanu (PF). The only thing the MDC-T can bring is that one can marry a person of his her own choice so can we trade our resources for sodomy,” said Sibanda

Last year, there were reports that Sibanda was on a whirlwind tour of the country to warn villagers against supporting the MDC-T. In July last year, Zaka villagers told Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai how Sibanda was terrorising them through an operation code named “Operation Kubudirana Pachena” under which he threatened villagers with death if they continued supporting the MDC-T. Sibanda, however, vehemently denied the allegations.

The sentiments by Sibanda add to previous threats by Zanu (PF) national spokesperson, Rugare Gumbo last year that war veterans would resist an MDC-T rule in Zimbabwe even if the party was to win the next elections.

“We have people who fought for the country and do you think they will just smile? Honestly, the situation will be messy if MDC is to win in the upcoming elections, ” Gumbo told The Zimbabwean.

A coup

In October, Gumbo had told e-News Channel Africa that there was the possibility of a coup in Zimbabwe if Tsvangirai won the next elections. In the same month, Justice Minister, Patrick Chinamasa told the BBC that Zanu (PF) and the military would resist an MDC-T victory in the next elections.

The developments have thrown into doubt prospects of a smooth transition of power in Zimbabwe.

Sibanda said the MDC-T was pushing foreign imperialist agendas and could not be entrusted with running the country. He blamed the MDC-T for being crybabies “yet they are the ones behind most of the violence that has characterized past elections”.

“In the past election, it was the MDC-T which was more violent but they have tried to blame that on the war veterans. I do not know why they always allege violence is with the war vets,” said Sibanda.

The MDC-T alleges that about 200 of its supporters died in the 2008 elections as war veterans and Zanu (PF) youth militia launched a crackdown on supporters of Morgan Tsvangirai.
