Best of the Best – Munya Mhonda

Munya Mhonda is part of the golden generation of Zimbabwean rugby stars. The former Prince Edward High School lock switched allegiance to Botswana in 2002 and has also represented the African Leopards, becoming the first Zimbabwean to play for and captain the continental side.

My Best Match

My best matches include one for Old Hararians against Old Miltonians in 2000 and in 2011 at UB Rhinos, when we played Hogs in Botswana. Both games culminated in my respective teams winning league titles.

My Best Team

The 1999 Port Elizabeth Tigers will always have a special place in my heart. We were a well-oiled unit and won the league.

My World’s Best Player

Richie McCaw, the New Zealand captain, is the best rugby player of our generation. His work rate and understanding of the game and its laws makes him a successful player and skipper.

My Best Memory

I have been lucky to travel across Africa. Thanks to the beautiful game of rugby, I experienced so many aspects of the continent. That is what I treasure most from my career. I also have fond memories of my call-up to the African Leopards in 2005.

My Best Sport and Sportsperson outside rugby

I like athletics. The amount of personal discipline required these days in training and diet is impressive. Usain Bolt has had highs and lows personally and professionally, but continues to excel in the sport.

Best Opponents I faced

The Uganda side of 2009. Those boys were well-conditioned.

My Best effort scored

A chip and chase that I regained and scored in the corner against Tanzania in an international match in 2007.

My Best coach/administrator

International Rugby Board educator, Zilwele Khumalo is the best administrator, but I have played under many good coaches including Saku Ngwenya. I was privileged to have been coached by him.

He was methodical and had good rapport with his players. It would be unfair to single out the best team-mate because of the number of brilliant players I have come across.
