Chiefs suspended over inputs

Several traditional chiefs are under investigation for allegedly selling farming inputs donated under President Robert Mugabe’s well wishers agricultural inputs scheme.

The probe is being spearheaded by Zanu (PF) and the party’s ministers, especially local government minister Ignatius Chombo whose ministry has jurisdiction over traditional chiefs.

Chief Phineas Makore of Gutu has been suspended from conducting any chieftainship business by Chombo after he was accused of abusing the facility.

Sources in the local government ministry confirmed that Makore had been stripped of chieftainship pending investigations. “Chief Makore has been suspended and he is not allowed to perform any chieftainship duties until the matter is finalized,” a highly-placed source within the local government ministry said.

Chief Munodawafa Murinye has also been implicated. Murinye has openly denied the allegations adding that his aides were the ones who abused the facility. It is understood that the government is also investigating Zanu (PF) bigwigs who allegedly abused the facility. Among those being investigated are former governor and politburo member Dzikamai Mavhaire, former Deputy Minster Shuvai Mahofa and former governor Willard Chiwewe among others.

The inputs were sourced by President Robert Mugabe at a cost of $20 million but the source of the funding still remains a mystery.
