MDC-T welcomes poll guidelines

The MDC-T has welcomed the recently announced rules and guidelines to be used during the Referendum and harmonised elections scheduled for this year saying it was an indication of the country’s preparedness for credible polls.

As part of the guidelines for the referendum and elections, ZEC announced yesterday that they would put in place impartial structures for the conduct of the elections.

The electoral body resolved to rope in the police, the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee, civil society and churches during elections while affirming a zero tolerance to violence during and after the elections.

The media was urged to report factually to aid efforts of building the nation.

MDC-T spokesperson, Douglas Mwonzora said: “That is very good news to us. It shows that we are getting ready for elections as a country and it is good that we have been able to set the rules and guidelines for the next elections.

“We are going to have time to look at these rules and guidelines and be able to critique them,” said Mwonzora.

The deputy spokesperson of the MDC led by Welshman Ncube, Kurauone Chihwayi said the announcement of the guidelines were welcome although he expressed reservations with the composition of the ZEC Secretariat.

“The announcement of the guidelines is good but we have serious reservations with the ZEC Secretariat that has been infiltrated by people from Zanu (PF) and the CIO.

“The issue of roping in the police and civic society to curb violence is welcome but we are surprised that the police have launched a crackdown on the same civic society organisations that they are supposed to partner,” said Chihwayi.

Zanu (PF) spokesperson, Rugare Gumbo said he was in a meeting when contacted for comment.
