The search led by police officer Mukura targeted homesteads which had benefited from the radios, suggesting an inside MDC member could have tipped off the police. Efforts to recover the radio sets were fruitless as police demanded purchasing and ZIMRA receipts as confirmation that the items were brought into the country legally.
MDC-T Mashonaland East Provincial Chairperson Pinnel Denga described the police action as unjustified since the radio sets were legitimate channels of information.
The crackdown scuttled two MDC-T party meetings on the day as police forced their way into homesteads where people were gathered for party structure business. “Police searches on this Saturday threw our party activities in jeopardy as most houses of participating members were targeted for the searches.
Despite the disruptions, MDC-T must remain focused until our objective of a new Zimbabwe is achieved,” said MDC-T Ward Youth Chairperson, More Maradza. Efforts to get comment from the police district offices in Marondera were fruitless as a senior officer referred The Zimbabwean to a landline number which was never answered.
