Stock theft cases decrease

Cases of stock theft have gone down countrywide, according to statistics released by police.

Addressing residents in Mutare during a police awareness campaign held at Sakubva bus terminus on Friday, National Anti-stocktheft coordinator, Senior Assistant Commisioner Enock Dumbura, said this was as a result of cooperation between members of the public and police.

He said the number of cases reported in 2012 went down to 5509 from 6269 in 2011. Dumbura also said the number of cattle stolen in 2012 decreased from 13 531 to 11 289 in 2012. The figure translates to a 17 percent drop.

“We would to thank members of the public for their cooperation with the police as this has helped in reducing cases of stock theft in the country,” he said. He also said the branding exercise which was carried out by police and other stakeholders such as farmers and AREX also helped to reduce such cases. Dumbura said illegal canteens and unregistered butcheries were fuelling stock theft cases and urged members of the public to report such cases.

“We urge farmers to continue branding their livestock for easy identification in case of a theft,” he said.
