Four Zimbabwean runners: Honest Mutsakani, Moses Munjodzi, Marko Mambo and Stephen Muzhingi have won the 56 km event in the past, while no Zimbabwean woman has ever won.
Muzhingi is expected to make a go at his second attempt for the gold medal at this year’s event, after he won it last year.
“With more than 80 per cent of all entries for the 2013 Old Mutual Two Oceans Ultra Marathon already sold, this year’s race could potentially see the biggest field in the history of the event,” said the event’s media team early this week.
Postal entries for this 44th edition of the race closed on February 20, while online entries close on Tuesday.
Entries are capped at a total of 11 000, with Race Director, Rowyn James, being inspired by the larger number of novices and women who have registered for the ultra marathon.
“Ladies make up 31 per cent of the field, which is an increase from last year. The most encouraging statistic is that of novices are making up 40 per cent of the field so far. It’s great to see increased interest in road running, especially amongst athletes who have never run the Ultra before,” said James.Post published in: Athletics
